Obituary

Virginia "Gennie" Murl Young was born February 5, 1963, and departed this life Wednesday, July 30, 2025, reaching the age of 62 years. She was the daughter of the late Lester and Ruth (Hill) Sullivan and the loving wife of Killis Young, whom she married on September 24, 1980.

She is survived by her husband and three children, Brian (Shannon) Young, Rebecca (Richie)VanHook and Heather (Richard) Ramsey; as well as her precious grandchildren, Katrina (Timothy) Malone, Alyssa (Austin) Young, Devon Bowling, Jaycee Shaffer, Triton and Laiklyn Young, Caleb, Kendall, Seth and Hudson VanHook, Collin, Ryver, and Sawyer Ramsey. Her siblings, Randall (Bonnie-deceased) Hall, Dewey (Debbie) Taylor, Carolyn (Dallas) Marcum, Elb Sullivan (Ann Savage), Glenda (Danny) Greer, Mamie (Heath) Robinson, Steve (Kari) Sullivan, and Marilyn (Donnie) Anderson, special friend, Sister Wilma Cheek, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents and three siblings, Barbara Dowdy, Cora Flynn, and Johnny Eaton.

She was a faithful member of the Parnell Church of God for 35 years where she accepted Christ as her savior and was baptized. This church was a big part of her life; her husband would become the pastor, and she would serve as the children's Sunday School teacher for 35 years. She enjoyed singing hymns both in church and at home. She took pride in not only attending church, but in her job of keeping the church clean as well. She bestowed much of her life witnessing to the children in her class and teaching them the ways of the Lord. She will forever be known to those she taught as "Mrs. Gen Gen." She demonstrated unwavering faith that was evident in the way she served and trusted God through all seasons of life. Though she has left this earthly home, we find comfort knowing she is now in the presence of our Savior.

She dedicated much of her life to caring for others, working as a loving caregiver to the elderly and a trusted babysitter for many children in her community. Her gentle heart, steady hands, and nurturing spirit touched countless lives, especially those she cared for.

One of Gennies greatest joys in life was being known as Mamaw. She cherished every moment spent with her grandkids-whether it was in the kitchen cooking, playing board games, putting together puzzles, playing Uno, coloring, picking vegetables from the garden, or the endless games of "Mother May I." Everything truly was better at "Mamaw's" house. She created lasting memories and left a legacy of love, laughter, and guidance that will forever live on in the hearts of her grandchildren.

She had a deep love for hand quilting, a craft that beautifully reflected her patience, creativity, and skill. Each quilt was stitched with love- many becoming cherished gifts for family and friends. Through every pattern and thread, Gennie wove together stories, memories, and warmth that will continue to comfort those who were lucky enough to receive them.

Most of all Gennie found joy in life's simple, beautiful moments-tending to her flowers, watching birds, and spending peaceful hours on her front porch, soaking in God's creation. These quiet pleasures brought her comfort in spending time with those around her. She was a loving, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister and she will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 2, 2025, between 10 am – 1 pm in the chapel of the funeral home.  Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 1 pm at the Hicks-Vaughn Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Parnell Church of God Cemetery.
