Sherman Gayle York was born August 8, 1945, to John Robert York and Eva Mae York of Albany, Kentucky. Sherman passed away at his home on March 3, 2023, reaching the age of seventy-seven years. Sherman was a 1963 graduate of Clinton County High School, where he played point guard on some of Clinton County's most successful basketball teams. Sherman continued his basketball career at Campbellsville College. Upon his graduation from Campbellsville College in 1967, Sherman began his career as a teacher, coach, and administrator at Wayne County High School. In 1981, Sherman left his career in education to open H&W Sports Shop, which he operated for many years until his retirement.
Sherman met his wife, Betty Sue Dalton York, when they were both students at Campbellsville College. They were married on June 14, 1968, and remained lovingly devoted to each other until her death on December 19, 2021.
Sherman was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Eva York, his wife, Betty Sue Dalton York, and his brother-in-law, Buddy Moore. He is survived by two sisters, Roberta Moore and Frances (Jackie) Sewell; two brothers-in-law, Walter Dee (Clorenda) Dalton and Timothy Rankin (Pam) Dalton; four nieces, Melissa Sewell Tallent, Paula (Ron) Kirby, Rachel (Jason) Dalton, and Molly (Nate) Clark; and two nephews, Byron Moore and Chip (Chelsea) Dalton. Sherman is also survived by several great-nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Monday, March 6, 2023, between 5 pm – 8 pm in the chapel of the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at 11 am at the Hicks-Vaughn Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Elk Spring Cemetery.
