Obituary

Roxie Victoria Kelsay Dalton was born October 25, 1929 in the Shearer Valley community of Wayne County, Kentucky. She departed this life in the dawning of a new day, September 1, 2023 at Wayne County Hospital.

Roxie was the daughter of Charles Omar Kelsay (affectionately known as "Ped") and Dorothy Ferrell Kelsay. She had one brother, Jess.
She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Dalton Davis (known to many in this community as Miss Carolyn) and her devoted son-in-law, Ralph Davis; her five grandchildren: Shannon Davis McCracken (Tony); Kellie Davis Carter (Shannon); Brandon Turpin (Elizabeth); and R.G. Davis (Kristin); six great grand-children: Davis McCracken; Caroline McCracken Hamm (Gage); Dalton Carter; Emma Carter, Kylin Turpin and Charlotte Davis.

She is also survived by four nieces and nephews: Early Ray Kelsay, Sheri Dalton Allen, John Thomas Dalton and Mary Dalton Guinn.
Roxie was preceded in death by her parents C.O. and Dorothy Kelsay; her brother Jess, her husband Ralph, her youngest daughter Kathryn "Cathie" Dalton Turpin, her son-in-law Chuck and grandson Kyle.

Following her high school graduation, Roxie married her sweetheart Ralph Hurt Dalton. He passed away far too young the day before what would have been their 50th wedding anniversary. As a young housewife in the 1940's, Roxie learned the domestic tasks of cooking on a woodstove, gardening, canning fruits and vegetables, preserving meat, making jams and jellies, quilting, and many other life skills under the tutelage of her mother-in-law, Opal and her grandmother-in-law Laura. She taught herself to crochet intricate doilies and to sew.

Roxie was a homemaker until she began working at the Monticello Shirt Factory in the 1950's. She began as a machine operator and later advanced to a supervisory position. She oversaw hundreds of employees teaching them to make professional shirts at work and then went home to make her family's clothes (both for school and special occasions), draperies, chair covers and anything that was needed.

Roxie began attending and became a member of the Immanuel Baptist church in the 1960's and attended well into her 80's, until her health no longer permitted.

She ended her work career when she retired from the Lake Cumberland Community Services as the Assistant Director to Bruce Brown. She was honored with a retirement celebration in 1991 for her "Enduring qualities of human understanding, compassion, integrity and unselfish devotion to public service."

After retirement, she and Ralph had the opportunity to travel to several states on their bucket list. After his passing, although heartbroken over the loss of her husband, she did not slow down or lose her independent streak, even flying to Kansas City by herself to meet her first great grandchild.
Throughout her life, Roxie remained grounded in practicality and a prudent approach. She meticulously crafted long-term plans to safeguard her independence while sparing her children from any financial burdens. When the time came, she chose to live at Golden Years Nursing Home, enjoying daily activities, often winning at bingo, making new friends, enjoying visitors and becoming an avid bird watcher, being able to identify native birds and rare birds throughout the seasons. She was a sharp dresser until the end, always feeling better with a bit of Nivea lotion on her hands, some nail polish and a cute top and statement necklace.

As the Covid-19 pandemic impacted us all, those changes to daily living activities for Roxie, along with dementia were difficult challenges that she and her family faced with courage and grace.
