Obituary

Phyllis Jean McAlpin, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and beloved daughter, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering dedication to her family, her community, and her faith.

Born in Albany, Kentucky, to Sam and Elsie Whittenburg, Phyllis grew up deeply rooted in family values. She often reflected fondly on her childhood, especially her time in Akron, Ohio, where she cherished long bike rides with her brother Sammy and Sunday walks to church with friends. Those carefree moments remained some of her most treasured memories.

Phyllis was a proud mother to Laura and John, whom she loved with all her heart. She spent her life ensuring her family was cared for, always putting their needs above her own, and sometimes making sure things were done her way, out of love. She worked at S & S Bargain Store in Monticello, Kentucky, for over 20 years, helping others in her community find just what they needed. Phyllis also served as a school nurse at Monticello School and later became a licensed hairdresser. In every role, she found purpose in serving others.

She had a true passion for finding a good bargain and loved going to rummage sales, where she rarely came home empty-handed. One of her greatest joys was working alongside her husband Johnny at their booth in Somerset, Kentucky, sharing laughter, conversation, and treasures with everyone who stopped by.

She was especially proud to be "Memaw" to Braxton and Preston. In her final year, she lived with her son John and his wife Sabrina, where she built a deeper bond with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She often said it was the happiest year she had experienced in more than two decades filled with love, laughter, and the joy of being surrounded by family.

Phyllis had a deep and abiding love for her Lord and Savior, and she carried her faith with her throughout her life. We find comfort in knowing that she is now resting peacefully in His arms, reunited with her loved ones who went before her.

She is survived by her children, John E. McAlpin III (Sabrina) of Elizabethtown Ky and Laura McAlpin, of Lexington Ky, her brother Kenneth W. Whittenburg of Louisville Ky, as well as her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Sam and Elsie Whittenburg; her husband, Johnny McAlpin; and her brother, Sammy R. Whittenburg.

Phyllis was deeply loved and will be missed. Her kindness, strength, faith, and stories will live on in all who knew her. Until we meet again, she will remain forever in our hearts.
