Penny
Doty
Feb 28, 1955 — Jul 22, 2026
Monticello
Penny Doty was born on February 28, 1955, in Wheeling, West Virginia. She was born to the late Marshall M. Doty and Della Mae (Deaton) Doty. Penny was raised by her mother and late stepfather, Woodrow G. Mace, in a blended family that brought together children from both of their previous families as well as children they shared together.
She departed this life on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, in Monticello, Kentucky.
Penny was known for her kind and generous heart. She was always willing to help anyone she could and never met a stranger. She loved to joke, make people laugh, and share her warmth with those around her. Penny had a strong personality and a little bit of a stubborn streak that those who knew her loved and will remember fondly. She knew what she liked, had her own way of doing things, and brought a special spark to every room she entered.
Penny had a beautiful singing voice, a gift she inherited from her mother, Della. Music was special to them, and one of their favorite songs was “The Old Rugged Cross.” Her family finds comfort knowing they are now together, harmonizing once again.
Penny deeply loved her large family and cherished each and every member. She found joy in the connections she shared with her family and took pride in watching the family grow with each generation.
Penny had a deep love for her home state of West Virginia and was a lifelong fan of the West Virginia Mountaineers. She also had a special love for cats and spent much of her time feeding and caring for stray and outdoor cats.
She is survived by her husband, James Sedlacek; her daughter, Kendra Oldaker-Leads (Jess Oldaker-Leads), who Penny considered a child; and her grandchildren, Saph (Sophia) Larkins and Hunter Leads. She is also survived by her siblings and step-siblings: Woodrow Mace (Deanna Lyons, Carl Mace, Michelle Nesbit, and Woody Mace); Sandra Flanagan (Sean Flanagan); Cathy Spears (Misty McCulty and Scott Spears); Lesa Richards (Tara King and Ryan Richards); her nephew, Tim Richards, child of her late sister Susan Richards; Woody Mace II (Cayden Mace); and Tammy Burge (Al Burge and Mae Burge).
She is also survived by her great-nieces and great-nephews: Nick, Tabby, Carlee, Devin, Trevor, Christian, Amber, Gabrielle, Rachael, Brandon, Keith, Kassie, Emilly, Ethan, Kristina, and Logan.
She was preceded in death by her brother, James Doty; her sister, Susan Richards; and her nephew, AJ Richards, son of Lesa Richards.
She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date, and Penny will be laid to rest with her family in Friendly, West Virginia.
The family would like to thank Hicks-Vaughn Funeral Home for their care and assistance with arrangements.
