Orman Burton was born August 23, 1925, in the Bud Community of Wayne County which was later impounded in 1952 and became part of Lake Cumberland. He was the son of the late Rufus and Versa "Hughes" Burton. He departed this life on July 4, 2023, having reached the age of 97 years. He made a profession of faith and joined Oak Grove Baptist Church in the autumn of 1952 and moved his membership to Faith Baptist Church in 2013.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Elaine "Richardson" Burton, three children, Douglas (Georgia) Burton, Sharon Burton (Don) Starry of Parrish, FL, and John (Elizabeth) Burton of Somerset; 6 grandchildren, Sarah Burton of Lexington, Jacqueline Hunt of Bowling Green, Jordan Hunt (Ryon) Schrunk, of Murfreesboro, TN, Bianca Hunt (Ryan) Whitten of Bowling Green, Erin Hunt of Huntsville, AL, and Eli John Hughes Burton of Somerset. He is also survived by two great-granddaughters, Aubrey Elaina Beavers and Madelyn Ashley Schrunk of Murfreesboro.
In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by a daughter, Anita Burton Hunt of Bowling Green; brothers Edsel Burton, MD, of Faubush, Denzil Burton, Kathleen Rector Bridgeman of Monticello, and Marita Burton Rector of Lorain, OH. Also surviving are brothers Donovan (Norma Jean) Burton, Darrell Burton of Monticello, and Orlis (Fay) Burton of Saint Petersburg, FL.
Orman joined the US Army during World War II and served in the European Theatre. He served in the Third Army under General George Patton and most notably fought in the Battle of the Bulge (Ardennes Forest) in Bastogne, Belgium. After the war, he returned to Kentucky, bought a farm in the Conley Bottom community, married, started a family, and became a farmer until he retired in his mid 70's and turned farming operations over to his sons.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather brother, relative, and friend that will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
The family will receive friends on Friday, July 7, 2023, from 5-8 pm in the chapel of the Hicks-Vaughn funeral home. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 8, 2022, at 1:00 pm in the chapel of the funeral home with burial in Elks Spring Cemetery.
Military honors will be provided by our local DAV Chapter 105.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Faith Baptist Church, Chapter 105 Disabled American Veterans, or Gideons International.
Hicks-Vaughn Funeral Home of Monticello is in charge of arrangements.
