NILA BARNES GEHRING was born January 7, 1919 and departed this life January 1, 2006 reaching the age of 86 years. She was the daughter of (the late) Jacob F. Smith and Catherine Byrd.

She was united in marriage to Arvil Barnes, who preceded her in death. She later married Homer Gehring who also preceded her in death.

She is survived by one son, Melvin Barnes of Monticello, KY; two daughters, Deborah Zimmerman of Monticello, KY and Nancy Hatmaker of Pioneer, TN; four grandchildren, Tony Daniels, Melva Bowlin, Mandy Kennett, and Ben Zimmerman; two step grandchildren, Jason and Casey Souders; seven great grandchildren, Chasidy Bowlin, Tonya Daniels, Megan Sounders, Calvin Daniels, Derekia Bowlin, Ericka Bowlin; and Robert Kennett; and one great great grandchild, Hailey Powe.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Catherine Smith; her first husband, Arvil Barnes; her second husband, Homer Gehring; four brothers, Coy, Hoy, Detro, and Kenneth Smith; and one sister, Iris Smith.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, relative and friend who will be sadly missed by all who knew her.


Visitation: Tuesday, January 2nd after 5 pm and Wednesday, January 3rd after 8 am
Funeral Service: Wednesday, January 3rd at 1 pm
Interment: Parmley's Grove Cemetery
