Obituary

Joyce Imogene (Smith) Cooper, age 86, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2019 at the Wayne County Hospital with family near.

A native of Monticello, Kentucky, Imogene was born on May 15, 1932 in Mt. Pisgah, KY to the late John Martin Smith and Ida (Hucaby) Smith. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Monticello.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Ray Cooper and a son Martin Ray "Marty" Cooper.  Additionally, she was pre-deceased by her four brothers, Howard Smith, Roy Smith, Marvin Smith and Ray Smith.

Imogene is survived by two sons, M. Lynn Cooper (Jerri) of Newburgh, Indiana and Barry W. Cooper (Annie) of Monticello; daughter-in-law, Freda Bishop (Tim) of Somerset, KY. Imogene had eight grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Her grandchildren included Brandon C. Cooper (Chantel) of Newburgh, Indiana, Angela M. Bee of Crestwood, Kentucky, Ryan M. Cooper (Brooke) of Lexington, KY, Mary Beth Stockton (Shane) Monticello, Barry M. Cooper (Sydney), Monticello, Melissa Moses, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Phillip Cooper (Kendra), Somerset, Kentucky and Andrew Cooper (Karissa) Somerset, Kentucky.

Imogene is also survived by her husband's aunt, Evelyn (Horton) Cross who was like a sister to her for many years.

Imogene enjoyed helping people.  One of her favorite jobs was with the OEO (Office of Economic Opportunity) where she helped hundreds through some government support.  She also enjoyed the daily New York Times crossword puzzles and tending her flowers and her birds.

Services will be held Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at 1 pm at the Hicks -Vaughn Funeral Home at 647 N. Main Street, Monticello. Burial will be at the Elk Springs Cemetery in Monticello. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 19, 2019 between 5pm – 8 pm in the chapel of the Hicks-Vaughn Funeral Home.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy be made in the form of a contribution to GLOW Ministries or Gideon Memorial Bible Plan.
