John W. Simmons, 81, of Monticello, passed away September 5, 2005 in Somerset, Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son, John K. Simmons; his parents Oscar M. Simmons and Stella C. Simmons; brothers O.M. Simmons, Jr. (Poss), Robert Simmons (Bob), and Gordon Simmons (Pud).
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie (Martie) Simmons of Monticello; daughter and son-in-law, Susan S. Hughes and Charles Hughes of Monticello; daughter and son-in-law, Jan S. Edmondson and S. Mark Edmondson of The Villages, Florida; granddaughter Sarah E. Hughes; grandsons Michael R Bohnenkamp and David V. Hughes; step granddaughter Laurel Weil and step great granddaughter Haylee Weil. He is also survived by two sister-in-laws and several nieces and nephews.
John was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church and Monticello Masonic Lodge #431 and Oleika Shrine. He received his fellowship in the Academy of Family Practice.
John was a graduate of Cumberland College and the University of Louisville Medical School. He completed his internship at the Norwood Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. He practiced family medicine in Monticello after he completed his education.
John was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. His military service included the Army, Air Force (where he held the position as Base Surgeon at Landsburg Air Force Base in Germany), and National Guard. He held the rank of Lt. Colonel when he completed his service.
John's never ending love of his family and friends, and his zest for life will be forever remembered.
Visitation: Wednesday, September 7th after 5 pm in the funeral home chapel
Funeral Service: Thursday, September 8th at 2 pm at First Christian Church
Interment: Elk Spring Cemetery
