Obituary

India Hammond, age 39, of Monticello, died on January 14, 2024 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. India was born on August 29, 1984, in Ocala, FL. She was the only daughter of Leroy and Leta Hammond of Monticello, Kentucky.

India was formed and shaped by faith, from the moment she was born until the time of her death. She was proud to be a member of St. Patrick's Episcopal church in Somerset. India invited many to come and worship in this open and affirming congregation and that truly ALL are welcome in this place. Reverend Mother Chris Brannock was an inspirational mentor to India and she loved her very much.

She could have pursued any number of careers, but she chose to balance her life of motherhood, advocacy, ministry, and artistry. India cherished her beloved daughter, Esther, and taught her the importance of loving from a pure heart.

India received a BA in Anthropology in 2014 from EKU, and an MBA from Cumberland University in 2017. She is known for her work in the SCL world (Supports for Community Living). Most recently, she was proud to begin her work through the University of Kentucky as a Disability Program Specialist, DDID, Quality Administrator.

India was dedicated, valiant, courageous, and always the evangelist. India was not afraid to let people know that Jesus died for all and that those who believe in Christ will be saved. India had a way of making others feel welcome and was emphatic about including everyone, including the LGBTQ community.

Music ran through her veins. She was incredibly talented, both in singing and playing a variety of instruments. Her gifts of music were always to glorify God. She grew up singing in a quartet with her mother, Leta, and blessed those who heard the wonderful harmony. All of these attributes, she gave wholeheartedly to her community.

She and her daughter, Esther, were currently serving on the Vestry of Saint Patrick's Episcopal Church in Somerset. She just completed a two year course to be licensed as a Lay Preacher for the Diocese of Lexington. India, Esther, and her partner, Gina were involved in the choir at Saint Patrick's. She was authentically herself, and gave her all in everything she did and accomplished in her life.

India is loved and cherished by many. Not only by her family and friends, but the communities with which she was passionately involved. India also loved going out on her boat, playing disc golf, throwing axes, fishing, and enjoying nature.

India is survived by her parents, Leroy and Leta Hammond, her beloved daughter, Esther Prater, and her beloved partner of over 10 years, Gina Prater. India also has numerous aunts, uncles, and a multitude of cousins. India looked forward to the Jones' Thanksgiving meal every year. India held Leta's family near and dear to her heart. India will be greatly missed by her favorite puppies Arya, Atreyu, Little Foot, and Scout.

Visitation will be held from 11am-2pm at Hicks Vaughn Funeral Home on Saturday, January 20, 2024, in Monticello, KY. The service will be at 2pm. The burial service will follow immediately afterwards at Elk Springs Cemetery.
