IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Estil Eugene
Hicks
September 22, 1937 – December 23, 2020
Estil Eugene Hicks was born September 22,1937 in the Spann Hill Community of Wayne County. He departed this life on Wednesday December 23, 2020, reaching the age of 83. Estil was the son of the late Delbert and Nettie Hicks. He was the youngest of 5 siblings. Estil was preceeded in death by his parents Delbert and Nettie, his brothers Ray and Paul, and his sisters Jewel Koontz and Irene Hicks. He was also preceded by his in-laws Glenn and Anna Lee Burke, and 3 brothers in law, Edward Koontz, Riley Ramsey and Bobby Burke.
Estil is survived by his wife of 62 years, Shirley Ann Hicks, 2 sons, David/wife Lisa, Stuart /wife Micah, and 1 daughter, Stacy Stumbo/ husband Matt. He was also the proud grandfather of 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Estil was also the proud uncle of many nieces and nephews, and had many cousins and other relatives and friends all across the United States.
Estil was a Christian and a faithful member of IBC, where he served as a deacon for many years. Estil also served on the board of directors at Mountain View Baptist Camp for several years. Estil grew up in the Rolly Creek area of the Spann Hill Community. Early on he and his family moved to Monticello, and resided in the Whittenburg Subdivision. He attended Monticello School through the 8th grade. At that time he left school to help his father in the logging business. His job as a 13 year old young man was to walk fresh mules from a stable on Spann Hill to a logging area in the Ritner community, and return the worked mules to the stable. Estil said on many occasions this was a 14-16 hour journey. Then at the ripe old age of 14, Estil began his driving career. He began driving a log truck for his father, along with his brother Paul, and brother in law Edward Koontz. They hauled logs from Ritner, to Bowling Green, Ky as well as some local sawmills. Estil had an elaborate working career. During the span from 1951 until he retired in 2017, Estil hauled gas, jet fuel, produce, lumber and wood products, sand, gravel, houseboats and car parts. His career concluded with nearly 6 million miles under his belt. Estil owned a couple different trucking companies in Wayne County over the years, and 1 in Pulaski county. He employed several people over the years, and always thought of his employees as an extension of his family. Although he officially retired in 2017 due to his health, he still had the desire to be behind the wheel until the day he passed. Estil served as a board member of the Monticello Electric Plant Board, for 2 terms, and he also served as President of the Wayne County Little League Baseball program for several years. During those years he coached a team as well, and enjoyed being able to help several young men with their dream of playing baseball.
Later in his life, he helped coach a church league softball team at Immanuel Baptist Church, with his good friend Lewis 'Spanky' Gregory. He was very proud of this team, and their commitment to the Lords ministry, and mission outreach that they represented. He was even prouder that they were State Champions and earned a trip to the Church league World Series. Even though his work ethic was rarely, if ever matched, his greatest passion was the love he had for his wife, his kids, and grandchildren, and now his great grandchildren. No matter what event or sport that any of them were involved in, he was always on the sideline and was their biggest cheerleader. Estil was also passionate about helping those less fortunate or in need. He helped many people throughout the coarse of his life, while never expecting anything in return. Estil was also never one to complain, whether it was work, health, or life in general. He always looked for the best in every situation, and always gave every situation his best. Estil had an infectious smile, and it followed him through life. He always enjoyed a good laugh, enjoyed telling a good story, and wasn't above pulling an occasional prank for a laugh. Even though he took a firm stance for what was always right, his smile carried over to all those around him, and will always be remembered as his trademark. Estil is now smiling down on us from heaven with that same infectious smile, while rejoicing with his family and friends who have went on before him. In the book of Matthew, 25:23 it says; 'Well done good and faithful servant, you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things, Enter into the joy of your Lord! Estil May You Forever Rest In Peace.
