Obituary

David Dewayne Foster was born on June 18, 1961 and passed away on June 19, 2026 at UK Hospital after a horrible battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

David was born to wonderful parents Lyle and Mary Hazel (Gillespie) Foster. He was the older brother to sisters Mary Ann(Jerry) Keith, Robin Fairchild, and Pamela (Joe) Flynn, that still bear scars from all their childhood antics. They were inseparable throughout life. He was the father of Toni (Darren) Thompson and Daniel Foster, the grandfather of Camryn (Jasmine) Thompson and Kade Thompson, and the great-grandfather of Malikye and Delilah Thompson.

From the time Dave learned to walk, he was on to adventure and sometimes accidents. The latter being the reason his mother had nerves of steel. From wrecking bikes to getting hit by a car on a bike when he was 13, Dave was hard on life at an early age. He wore 11 different cast on his leg that was broken in 3 different places and healed together with screws. We guarantee he was the only kid they had to slow down on crutches on the stairwells of the old Wayne County Middle School (yeah that was a call his mother got). He rebroke that leg at least twice

Dave was funny and always had a joke to tell and had a smile on his face. He loved his family and friends fiercely. He would give anyone the shirt off his back.

He loved big trucks, old cars, and rat rods. He could take nothing and build something beautiful and unique. He was a published poet and loved to draw as well.

Dave drove a semi for many years. He delivered houseboats, hauled oil, cement, and many other things. It was his love of driving a semi that led him to his last job as a CDL instructor at Somerset Community College. He had a passion for helping the next generation of truck drivers reach their goal of getting their CDL’s.

David had developed pulmonary fibrosis and struggled with his health for some time. He was waiting to go on the lung transplant list at the time of his death. He worked until the day he fell ill at work and was transferred to UK.

When his mom and dad passed, it was a crushing blow for the whole family but for Dave it was a wound that never healed even a tiny bit. To know he met Jesus and was reunited with his Mom and Dad and his precious granddaughter Carrigan Foster, our hearts are lighter.

If you ever knew David Foster, you knew that you could’ve called him anytime and he would have come. He loved the Lord, his family and friends. We will meet again.

The family will receive friends on Monday, June 22, 2026, between 5 pm and 8 pm in the funeral home chapel. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 11 am at the Hicks-Vaughn Funeral Home Chapel.

Hicks-Vaughn Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
