Obituary
Dr. Andrew M. "Doc" Brown was born October 30, 1930 in Melrose, MA, and departed this life Friday, May 25, 2012, at the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset, KY, reaching the age of 81. He was the son of the late James Manfred Douglas and Sarah Elizabeth "Sally" (Ring) Brown.
He was united in marriage to Nancy Byrd and to this union 4 children were born. He also had 2 children by a previous marriage.
He is survived by: his wife, Nancy Brown of Monticello, KY; 2 sons, Andrew "Andreas" (Jessica) Brown, Jr. of Clinton, MA and Alan M. (Michele M.) Brown of Londonderry, NH; 4 daughters, Susanna L. Wall of Pittsfield, MA, Betsy "Beetsie Beets" (Lee) Jourdan of Monroe, GA, Carol "C.P." (Gerald) Lewis of Tateville, KY, and Krista "Chick" (Rob) Shepard of Monticello, KY; 6 grandchildren, Michael B. Brown, Lee F. "Trey" White, III, Jeffrey P. Brown, Lee Jourdan, Duncan Jourdan, and Zoe Shepard. He is also survived by a host of family and friends who mourn his passing....along with Polly the cat.
In addition to his parents, James and Sally Brown, he was preceded in death by: 1 sister, Caroline Diamond.
Andrew had a Bachelor of Music degree and a Master of Music degree from Boston University, a Master of Arts degree in German literature from the University of Connecticut, and a Doctor of Education degree in adult education from the University of Georgia. He taught music at the Center for Continuing Education at the University of Georgia and served as chairman of the music departments of Ferrum College and Andrew College. He retired from college teaching to devote all his time to the piano. Additonally, he taught voice and piano in his home for many years.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 from 6 – 9 pm in the chapel of the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 11 am at the Marvin S. Hicks Funeral Home with Rev. Darrell Vance officiating. Burial will be in Elk Spring Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to:
